MANHATTAN Police officers from Riley and Pottawatomie counties shot and injured a subject firing a gun outside Quality Inn and Suites Tuesday morning after the subject disregarded the officers' orders to stop.

Officers responded at about 6:02 a.m. Tuesday when the Riley County Police Department received a 911 call reporting shots had been fired at the hotel, located at 150 E. Poyntz Ave., a RCPD press release stated.

Officers from the RCPD and Pottawatomie County were the first to arrive on scene, where they observed the subject firing the weapon.

The subject hasn't yet been identified.

Police ordered the subject to cease firing and drop the weapon. When the subject didn't comply with those orders, officers returned fire, striking the subject multiple times.

Officers immediately rendered first aid and called for medical assistance.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident, police stated.

The subject was transported to Mercy Regional Hospital. Police haven't yet released further information about the subject's medical condition.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) will handle the investigation, RCPD Director Brad Schoen stated in the press release.

"Given the involvement of RCPD officers in the shooting, I have asked that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation handle the investigation," he stated. "The KBI has agreed to do so and is now the lead agency in the case."

The subject was arrested for aggravated assault.

"Additional criminal charges are possible pending completion of the investigation and referral to the Pottawatomie County Attorney's Office," Schoen stated.

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, Kansas State University Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Wamego Police Department assisted the RCPD during the incident.
