George Wilfred Waner was called home by his maker on Oct. 24, 2013.
He was born Aug. 18, 1924, the son of Andrew and Francis Waner. George was one of seven children, five boys and two girls.
He was predeceased by all his brothers and sisters with the exception of one, brother, Vernon Waner.
George grew up in Florence and met his wonderful wife, Wanda Haviland and married her in Wichita on Aug. 14, 1949. George and Wanda Waner were still happily married for a total of 64 years at the time of his death.
He was predeceased by one son, James Waner.
George is survived by his wife, Wanda; two sons, Andrew and Kenneth; one daughter, Teresa; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
George was drafted into the Army in 1943 and retired as a chief warrant officer after 27 years, two months and five days of service. He served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cuban missile crisis.
He served his country with great honor and much personal sacrifice. George loved the military and continued to teach military students through various colleges on Fort Riley.
He did that for 20-plus years following his retirement.
He was a great soldier, father and husband and will be missed by all who loved him.
Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Xavier Catholic Church, Junction City on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in Florence at Holy Family Parish - St. Patricks Church with lunch following.
