Junction City police Tuesday morning seized $828,220 in what's believed to be drug proceeds after a traffic stop on Interstate 70.

A Junction City Police Department K-9 unit found the cash after stopping a GMC pickup with Colorado tags at about 9:34 a.m. near milepost 289 on I-70.

Police Chief Tim Brown Tuesday evening said during the stop an officer established probable cause to search the vehicle driven by Marshall H. Dion, 78, of Tuscon, Ariz.

The officer found the cash inside boxes in the bed of the truck, according to a Tuesday press release from the JCPD.

Dion was arrested and charged with transporting drug proceeds and speeding.

He was booked into the Geary County Detention Center and is being held without bond until his first appearance in Geary County District Court.

Brown declined to comment on whether the K-9 unit dog was alerted to something inside the vehicle or how the officer developed probable cause.

"The facts concerning that will be brought out in court," he said.

Brown said during his career, he's never seen an amount of cash this size confiscated.

"I think this is the largest amount that's been seized in Geary County," Brown said.

Police also seized the pickup.

Deputies from the Geary County Sheriff's Department assisted with the case.

After following the necessary process, which Brown said will involve criminal and civil cases, the seized proceeds could be split between the agencies involved.

This is the third time in the past month in which a significant drug arrest has been made on an out-of-state resident or residents while on I-70.

On June 7, Junction City police arrested Robert and Cynthia Anderson of California after finding marijuana and a large amount of money inside their RV.

Geary County Sheriff's Department deputies on June 2 seized $350,000 worth of pot and arrested Justin Wendling, Adina Jones and Alvery Miner, all of Fredonia, Ariz., after performing a traffic stop.
